What is Energy Leadership?

In last week’s post, I mentioned I am a certified coach who leverages the framework of Energy Leadership. This week, I’d like to dive a bit more into what that means and discuss how some of the principles of Energy Leadership can be applied to your everyday life.

I’ve always been a bit of a nerd, so I’m going to start with the basic definitions of Energy and Leadership.

According to the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, energy is defined as: (1) a dynamic quality; (2) the capacity of acting or being active; (3) a usually positive spiritual force; (4) a fundamental entity of nature that is transferred between parts of a system in the production of physical change within the system and usually regarded as the capacity of doing work. (5) usable power.

From the same resource, leadership is defined as: (1) the office or position of a leader; (2) capacity to lead; (3) the act or instance of leading. When you look up the definition of leader, one of the definitions is “a person who has commanding authority or influence.”

Putting those definitions together, energy leadership is using your dynamic qualities and power to command and influence your life, and the lives of others.

So what does this mean, and how can it help you?

While some folks may not believe that they have commanding authority or influence over their life, they do. In fact, we, as individuals, are the only ones that have commanding authority or influence over our life. So – when we talk about leadership, it’s not just about leadership in a Corporation, it’s mainly about leadership of yourself, and those around you as you navigate life. Whether that be at home, at work, or any other social engagement.

Energy Leadership explains that our perceptions and mindset provide a point of reference for how we see the world, and how the world sees us. So, by understanding your energy, your perceptions and your mindsets around certain situations, you can start to understand how you are influencing your own stress and success, but also the success and stress of others. You can also start to evaluate if your perceptions and mindset are working for you, or against you and have the power to change them to better serve your goals.

What are some things you can do to start incorporating energy leadership into your life?

  1. Start to evaluate if your thoughts are true to you, or the universal truth. For example, would someone with a different perspective think the same way and draw the same conclusion?

  2. Start a gratitude journal. By flipping the script and looking for things that we’re grateful for, rather than focusing on things that are frustrating us, we can start to shift our energy to a higher level and reduce our judgments around others.

  3. Start to ask yourself, “is this mindset serving me?” By challenging your current way of thinking, you can start to break out of your mold and evaluate the situation from a different perspective.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to go into more detail about six influencers that are impacting our energy and the seven different mindsets that people tend to fluctuate between. Gaining a deeper understanding of these influencers and mindsets can also help you start incorporating the practice of Energy Leadership into your everyday life.
